How to write a Eulogy

Let’s be honest, writing a Eulogy is often the last thing that a person wants to deal with after the loss of the loved one. Although writing an impactful eulogy is challenging, there are tips that can help one break the writer’s block and the emotional turmoil that can be associated with writing. Listed below are some important tips that our founder uses to create amazing content:

Being in Touch with your emotions

Being in touch with your emotions is perhaps one of the most important components when writing a moving Eulogy. This can clearly be challenging during grief; however it is necessary to capture the way that you feel with honesty and rawness that is moving and memorable. Being in touch with your emotions can allow you to step outside of your circumstances, while at the same time being true to your grief. An effective eulogy conveys passion, and a prevailing message that is memorable and meaningful. This is one of the major reasons why clients come to us as sometimes emotional extremes make it challenging to write. Emotional awareness however is a prerequisite to writing a powerful eulogy.

Great places to start

Sitting in front of the computer staring at the screen not knowing where to start, perhaps is one of the greatest frustrations that cause many to give up. Of course, this is something we can help you with, however if your going to take a crack at it here are some great places to start.  Think about your favorite memories, what prevailing life ideology did your loved one have, and what was important to your loved one. Also think about favorite memories, funny stories, and what made this person unique. It is important to remember why you want to honor this person and convey this through memories allowing others to understand just how impactful your loved one was.

Know your audience!

Knowing who you will be speaking or writing to must be taken into consideration when writing your eulogy. For example, we have seen many times family members simply not get along, and the speaker has to be careful with what is being said to ensure cohesion during the funeral. Knowing your audience will help you understand the appropriate tone of humor, any potential stories that should be avoided, as well as the relational dynamics that the audience had with the deceased.

Be Objective

Understand what you want to say, and do not exaggerate. It’s human nature to idealize and romanticize our deceased loves ones, however this can create mixed feelings among the audience. Being objective and focusing on concrete memories and accomplishments will create a sense of authenticity which is a fundamental component of any eulogy.

Don’t be generic!

Let’s face it quality matters and you do not want to put your audience to sleep. Your eulogy must be personalized, relevant, and identify the correct tone that best represents your loved one. Using generic phrases and bland language does nothing to your audience except make them daydream.  Start with the unique characters of your loved one, powerful accomplishments, and capturing and honoring their memory. Being generic will just put your audience to sleep, so make it personal and avoid the temptation to slip into useless jargon.
